RE100 Leadership Awards return for second year

The RE100 Leadership Awards, run by Climate Group in partnership with CDP, are returning for their second year running to celebrate the pioneering work of some of the world’s most influential businesses as they shift to 100% renewable electricity.

The Awards recognise the cutting-edge achievements of RE100 companies who are at the forefront of the clean energy transition and are driving down emissions fast as they transform the renewable electricity landscape by setting ambitious sustainability goals.

The winners will be revealed at Climate Week NYC in September which is run in partnership with the United Nations and the City of New York. Winning companies will feature in a special Leadership Awards video and be invited to take part in a ‘Meet the Winners’ interview series.

Since its launch in 2014, more than 300 major businesses from multiple sectors and countries around the world have joined RE100 which now has a combined demand for renewable electricity bigger than that of a G7 country.

Each RE100 business has pledged to source 100% of their global electricity from renewable sources by 2050 – with most on track to reach that target far sooner – a goal that was almost unheard of even a few years ago. To enter the Awards, RE100 members will need to create a short video that showcases how they are going above and beyond the minimum RE100 requirements – driving action to inspire others and making the transition to 100% renewable electricity even faster.

Sam Kimmins, Head of RE100, Climate Group, said: “Corporate demand for renewables is growing and as world leaders gear up for COP26, the Awards are an outstanding opportunity for RE100 members to showcase how they are leading the way to power a green economic recovery while inspiring others to join the clean energy revolution. “We’re proud that RE100 brings together some of the world’s best-known businesses and we’re excited to find out more about how our members are demonstrating exceptional innovation, ambition and action as they make the switch to 100% renewable electricity.”

Nicolette Bartlett, Executive Director at CDP, said: “More and more companies are stepping up on renewables — realising that being part of the clean energy transition makes business sense today and helps future proof their business for the economy of tomorrow.

“We know we must transition to net-zero and renewables are central to that shift. Every major company should follow the lead of our RE100 award entrants and commit to 100% renewable energy.”

There are four award categories, with topics ranging from innovation and transparency to collaboration and ambition. They are:

RE100 Changemaker: Reaching 100% renewable electricity is only one part of sustainability goals RE100 companies set. This Award celebrates members setting ambitious broader energy goals alongside their renewable electricity objectives, finding innovative ways to achieve these targets, and implementing the most impactful sustainability strategies.

RE100 Market Trailblazer: RE100 companies operate across multiple markets, including those where it is not yet possible or difficult to source renewables. This Award celebrates RE100 companies who are committed to driving market change, communicating transparently about the barriers they face, and collaborating with companies, utilities and governments to drive change.

RE100 Key Collaborator: Sharing best practice and key learnings is vital to ensure that more and more companies will be able to implement and achieve their sustainability targets. This Award recognises RE100 members who are collaborating with their peers and suppliers, as well as publicly disclosing their energy and emissions data, as they work towards their renewable electricity goals.

RE100 Enterprising Leader: RE100 companies span industries and markets and vary in operational size and market share. This Award celebrates ambitious companies demonstrating leadership in their industry or home market by embarking on their renewable electricity journey or ‘going above and beyond’ in their efforts to achieve their targets, despite having a smaller operational footprint.
