States and regions pledge further funding for climate action

28 January 2019, 14:10 UTC 2 min read

The Future Fund was established in 2016 to empower state and regional governments to accelerate the shift towards a world of well below 2°C of warming. The fund provides assistance to these regions to act on climate change by supporting them to develop projects to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, undertake secondments with their peers to learn and exchange on successful climate policy and participate in international climate negotiations.

“We are delighted that Scotland, Wales, Québec, and Baden-Württemberg have decided to support the Future Fund this year. From the latest IPCC report, we know that we need to accelerate the pace of climate action worldwide. Regions in developing countries want and need to take climate action but need practical and financial support to do so.  And this year thanks to the continued generosity of these climate leaders, we will be able to support many more regions with their development journey towards a low carbon economy.”

Tim Ash Vie, Director of the Under2 Coalition Secretariat

This year’s funding will be allocated across a range of projects, secondments and peer-learning opportunities. The fund will be open to applications from developing and emerging economy states and regions in March 2019.

In 2018, the Future Fund funded the following:

  • The state of Colima (Mexico) is currently updating its greenhouse gas inventory
  • Cross River State (Nigeria) will be visiting the province of Québec to learn about sustainable forest management and carbon capture
  • The state of São Paulo (Brazil) will exchange with Wales (UK) in April 2019 on 2050 pathways planning and long-term decarbonization strategies
  • Travel support to assist 21 regions to attend the Under2 Coalition General Assembly at the Global Climate Action Summit in September 2018

Government quotes

Benoit Charette, Minister of the Environment and the Fight against Climate Change said:

“The Government of Québec is proud to sponsor the Future Fund for developing and emerging economy regions for a third consecutive year. Québec’s financial contribution supports in a concrete way the participation of developing regions in the Under2 Coalition activities and their fight against climate change. Through this act of international solidarity, Québec once again shows the kind of values it wants to promote.”

Roseanna Cunningham, Scottish Environment Secretary said:

“Scotland has been widely praised internationally for our work to tackle climate change and that includes supporting developing and emerging nations and economies to take action. We are clear that these regions are fundamental to the global effort to address climate change, whether through policies that support decarbonization internationally or through taking climate mitigation measures locally. Scotland was a founding contributor to this fund so, working with our international partners, I am pleased to confirm this further funding which will empower developing and emerging regions to accelerate action to help limit global temperature rises.”

Lesley Griffiths, Minister for Environment, Energy and Rural Affairs in Wales, said:

“Climate Change is not an issue we can solve as individual nations but one which we need to take collective action. Wales is fully committed to supporting the Future Fund because it is essential to work together on this global challenge.”

Franz Untersteller, Minister of the Environment, Climate and the Energy Sector of Baden-Württemberg said:

“Last year, we saw a record number of extreme weather events all over the world. Climate change is real, it is happening and it is accelerating. We urgently have to move forward in combatting climate change. Baden-Württemberg is proud to contribute to this effort by supporting the Future Fund.”
