The Future Fund was established in 2016 to empower state and regional governments to accelerate the shift towards a world of well below 2°C of warming. The fund provides assistance to these regions to act on climate change by supporting them to develop projects to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, undertake secondments with their peers to learn and exchange on successful climate policy and participate in international climate negotiations.

This year’s funding will be allocated across a range of projects, secondments and peer-learning opportunities. The fund will be open to applications from developing and emerging economy states and regions in March 2019.
In 2018, the Future Fund funded the following:
- The state of Colima (Mexico) is currently updating its greenhouse gas inventory
- Cross River State (Nigeria) will be visiting the province of Québec to learn about sustainable forest management and carbon capture
- The state of São Paulo (Brazil) will exchange with Wales (UK) in April 2019 on 2050 pathways planning and long-term decarbonization strategies
- Travel support to assist 21 regions to attend the Under2 Coalition General Assembly at the Global Climate Action Summit in September 2018
