Climate Group reacts to EU Governments’ decision to ban ICE cars and vans by 2035

Following the vote on 28th June, with the 2035 phase-out date for ICE vehicles now reaching a further stage, Climate Group along with EV100 members that have signed the letter ICE phase out joint call, have issued the following comment:

The decision reached yesterday is good news. Together with our EV100 members and many other partners, we have consistently called for a 2035 phase out date for ICE sales, which we believe is crucial to achieving the EU’s climate targets, as well as the long-term competitiveness of its automotive industry. Leading businesses are already transitioning their fleets to electric. The EU should not let itself get distracted by efuels, but maintain the clear signal that gives businesses the confidence to invest in EVs as the future of road transportation.

Sandra Roling, Director of Transport, Climate Group

Signatories to our original letter last month ICE phase out joint call, including EV100 members, also offered comment:

We’re pleased to hear the news out of Brussels – a 2035 phase-out date for ICE vehicles across the EU is something that, together with partners, we have been calling for. As part of EV100, we are committed to transitioning our own fleet to electric by 2030, and as a business that is investing in EVs, today’s ruling gives us clarity and confidence to continue to do so. The ruling today is a positive vote of confidence in businesses like ours that are committed to zero emission transport.

Tomas Björnsson, Vice President E-Mobility, Vattenfall

We warmly welcome the announcement that the EU will ensure all new cars in Europe are zero emission by 2035.

Uber is committed to being a zero-emission platform by 2030 in Europe. This announcement is an example of a clear and ambitious policy which is both good for the environment and will help us achieve our goals.

Anabel Diaz, Uber Regional General Manager for EMEA

Danfoss has been contributing to zero emission driving for over three decades and we fully support to end the sale of combustion engine cars and vans by 2035. With 27% of all global energy-related CO2 emissions coming from transport, electrification is critical if we are going to limit global warming to 1.5C. This vote not only sends a strong message out that Europe is serious about the green transition and meeting the Paris Agreement goals, but it also sets an important precedent for the rest of the world to live up to.

Martin Rossen, Senior Vice President Communication & Sustainability at Danfoss

We welcome the vote today. With more investment in renewable energy, networks and storage, it will be possible to support only zero emissions new cars in Europe by 2035. A rapid transition to electric mobility will help Europe to deliver its climate change targets and establish a leadership position globally, unlocking a wide range of industrial opportunities.
